The Pit Bull Owner's
Code of Conduct

As I have mentioned in several places on this site, every negative incident involving a pit bull is a strike against the breed-type, and pit bulls take the blame for just about everything. These are the most important rules of conduct that pit bull owners must swear to follow in order to ensure public safety, ensure the safety of their dogs, support the breed-type, and prevent the spread of breed-specific legislation.
  1. I will train and socialize my dog to be a good ambassador of the breed.
  2. I will neither allow my dog off-leash in public nor take my dog to dog parks.
  3. I will not allow my dog to exhibit aggressive behavior.
  4. I will spay or neuter my dog.
  5. I will not chain my dog.
  6. I will not crop my dog's ears or tail, make it wear a spiked collar, name it "Killer", or do anything else to make my dog appear vicious.
  7. I will never leave my dog alone with a child, another dog, or a small animal.
  8. I will take full responsibility for any accidents caused by my dog.
  9. I will stand up for my dog.
  10. I will fight breed-specific legislation with a passion.
  11. I will not breed or buy; I will adopt.
  12. I will be active in, or supportive of, pit bull rescue efforts.
  13. I will educate myself and others about dog behavior and the pit bull breed-type.
  14. I will educate myself and others about dog bite safety and effective non-breed-specific dangerous dog legislation.
  15. If my dog is exhibiting behavior problems, I will seek professional assistance immediately.
  16. If my dog does something wonderful, I will make sure everyone knows about it, including the media.
  17. I understand that owning a dog is a lifelong commitment.
  18. I will give my dog food, water, shelter, and proper veterinary care.
  19. I will follow the letter of the law.
  20. I will love my dog with all my heart.
