RANCHO CUCAMONGA (KABC) — A unique contest is under way in Rancho Cucamonga to call attention to the number of homeless pit bulls awaiting adoption in Southern California. The Rancho Cucamonga Animal Care and Adoption Center is hosting “Pit Idol 2010.” Organizers say the goal is to teach people about the wonderful qualities of the misunderstood breed.

Beginning January 12, visitors to the center can walk through the kennels and choose from one of 10 pit bulls in the competition. In March, the dog with the most votes will be crowned “Pit Idol 2010″ and will be awarded a scholarship to a the Dogs Et Cetera Training school, where it will earn an American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Certificate.

“They have these wonderful traits. They’re goofy, they’re fun loving, they’re loyal, they’re super smart. They’re friendly, affectionate, all those things that people don’t realize, you know, that they are,” said Victoria Johnson of the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Care and Adoption Center.

All of the visitors who vote for the winning dog will be eligible to win $500 in a drawing. Other prizes include a Vizio LCD High-Definition Television and an iPod Nano.
