SALT LAKE CITY – Research shows that pit bulls make up 25 percent of all intakes at the Salt Lake County Animal Shelter. Advocates say many families fear the breed but shouldn’t. “At the beginning of the year we were euthanizing about 76 percent of our adoptable euthanasia were pit bulls,” Director of Salt Lake County Animal Services, Shawni Larrabee said.

Salt Lake County started a new program to change the pit bull image. ‘Bully Breed’ started in July, offering free spay and neuter to any pit bull or pit bull mix in the county. The dog and their owner also get discounts on training classes. Since starting the ‘Bully Breed’ program, Salt Lake County cut down pit bull euthanasia by 13 percent and sterilized 100 dogs.
